Friday, June 19 (from Nancy Chaney, Las Mesas Team)
We are here! We send a lot of love (amor) to you. We are having a great time. Honduras is unbelievably beautiful.
Our plane ride here was very bumpy and scary – we’ll have to tell you about it – but we made it safely. So far we have stayed two nights at the “Bug House” and there are a lot of bugs, but not too bad. It has rained a lot and is muddy. But the view from the front porch of the bug house is of mountains, banana trees, pineapples and coffee growing on the sides of the mountains. There are a bunch of little kids who come around and play with us all the time, and they are so cute.
Their laughter sounds like tinkling bells. Yesterday John and I went to Copan and shopped at the market. We bought 20 pineapples, 80 carrots, 80 cucumbers, and 30 pounds each of rice and beans. Then we drove to two schools on the mountain and handed out food to the children. We danced and played with them, handed out bibles and told them how much Jesus loves them. Then in the afternoon we visited three families who have very sick people. We gave them medicine and prayed with them. I’ll have to tell you about the one woman who made me cry, after praying with her. It was amazing. They live in little mud huts with dirt floors and one bed for three or four people…no front doors. Lots of dogs and chickens running around. Today John is up on the mountain, gathering fresh-cut trees for wood to help build another school. He is working really hard, I’m sure!
I have spent another morning in Copan, getting more food for the schools, and doing a little shopping. Copan has cobbled streets and charming stores, and I have found a few souvenirs. This afternoon we will deliver more food to the children, and a large family box to another family. Oh, and I had to drive down in the back of a pick-up truck! Tonight we are coming back down to Copan (again) to meet at Senor Motino’s house for a fiesta with both of our missionary groups. Tomorrow we get on horses to help with a medical clinic, back up in the mountains.
Some things that are a little strange: when we go to th e bathroom, we have to put our toilet paper in a trash can because we can’t flush it down. And this morning, I took about a half a shower when the water ran out. So I had to dry off my soapy body and leave it at that. But we are still living like kings compared to the people we are meeting. The poverty here is quite something to see. We are having beans and thick tortillas with every meal, but we have also had other things: eggs, spaghetti, even coffee cake this morning. The food is delicious, and the ladies who cook it for us are very gracious.
We have been thinking about you all and hoping you are having a good time... We are having a great time, and are looking forward to sharing lots of stories with you when we return!
Oh, P.S. ...I am really good at driving a 4-wheel vehicle now!
I have navigated through the muddy, rocky, cliffy roads quite well!
This trip is toughening me up for sure! Lots of love to you all again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
