Weekly Update from the Senior Pastor
May 10, 2006
Dear Family and Friends,
A final word or two on the Da Vinci Code as the film arrives this weekend.
My old grand-pappy used to say: “there’s no need to beat a dead horse.” If something—or someone is really dead, hey, don’t worry about it. Yet there will never be an end to books, movies and interpretations trying to undermine the reality of the resurrection of Jesus Christ because, in fact, this “Horse” is alive. And that reality challenges and haunts the hearts of those who want to be their own little gods.
At the end of the day, because Jesus is the risen Lord of history, victorious over death, returning as the Judge of all, we don’t need to defend Him. In fact it is just the opposite: as we follow Him, He will be, for us, our unbeatable Champion. So remember where you placed the DVC FACT SHEET and be bold in engaging wherever you have opportunity.
MAY 21: LAND CELEBRATION: Pray for sunshine! IF that weekend is rainy, we’ll pull back to our normal schedule of two services at our worship center. IF the land is dry, we’ll party. Here are more details:
- Thank you so much, congregation, for all the volunteer sign ups last Sunday covering so many areas of the day, from parking to set up, from food to logistical details to tear down.
- We need ten good men to help Mike Poist construct on our land the mother of all temporary stages on Saturday, May 20 from 12:00-6:00 p.m. If you can sign up for that, please contact Bob Fournier at 301-253-5276 x105.
- The idea of all of us together building a monument of stones that day at the foot of the cross [Ebenezer = the stones of God’s help (1 Samuel 7:12)] could be the beginning of a beautiful stone garden someday. We are trying to find uniform field stones and provide them for every one attending, so single adults, couples and families can go select stones, write their names and a promise or message on the stone, then place it at the foot of the Cross.. We’ll know for sure soon if we will have the stones on site that day—but plan on building!
- Our worship service will be shorter, interactive and kid-friendly (as well as visitor-friendly) and once we have dedicated our land and ourselves to the opportunity ahead, we’ll feast and have fun on the land.
We’re very close to clear interim plans on our temporary location with some God-stories emerging. And our civil engineer, project manager and architect are working well with our team, so we’ll soon have some clear preliminary ideas about a first phase building to present. The bricks and mortar stuff will be exciting over the next few years, even more exciting will be building homes of Light by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are going to put tangible tools for that project in your hands, to equip you to be a master-builder. The journey begins with your decision to build for God’s glory—
“for everyone who hears these words of Mine [said Jesus] and acts upon them may be compared to a wise builder who builds his home upon the Rock. And the rain descends and the flood rises and the storm winds blew and beat against that house, yet it did not fall, for it has been built on the Rock.” Matthew 7:24-25. That’s our goal. Amen.
