Weekly Update from Damascus Road Community Church
October 12, 2007
Dear Congregation:
As we told you in our e-mail/letter on Thursday, Oct 11, Richard has recently been experiencing health problems. Shortly after that letter was sent, he developed acute urinary tract symptoms that necessitated an emergency trip to Johns Hopkins. Doctors there confirmed that he has a blockage which, while serious, is not life-threatening. He is scheduled to have urological surgery this coming Monday, October 15.
We ask you to join us in prayer for Richard - for the skill of the surgeons and the healing touch of our loving God. We know that many of you will want to offer encouragement, but in order to let him rest, we request that you do not contact Richard directly. Instead, you can send a card with expressions of love and encouragement to the church office at 9886-B Main Street, Damascus, MD 20872 or via e-mail to damascus@damascus.com. Staff will make sure that the cards and notes are delivered to Sallie.
Thank you for your faithfulness in prayer and support for Richard, and for the leadership, during this time. We are confident that God is on His throne and will work for good even in this difficult situation.
More news:
- On Wednesday the elders led a prayer time on the land focused on who God is and specifically on our need to confess. Glynn Thompson reminded us that 2/3 of the scripture references on confessing were about us, the created, confessing who the Creator is. Only 1/3 of those references were about us confessing who we are. It seems like a healthy balance doesn’t it? We plan to continue meeting each Wednesday in October as we seek God’s will and direction in our congregation. It would be great to have you join us!
- Last Sunday the elders led our worship service in focusing on the fifth point of the ‘focus on 5’ - “Doing the next right thing”. If you were there I’m sure God spoke to you in both the songs that were sung and the teaching that the elders did. Without dethroning self and enthroning God we will not know who we were created to be or how to do the next right thing. If we study the Word, pray for understanding, and listen carefully God will make it crystal clear what our next right thing is.
- October is Pastor Appreciation month! It would be very cool if you would write a note to one of our pastors or staff members. Send a card, or do something else that would bless them during this month. It is our natural tendency to only say something if we have a complaint or problem. Let’s be intentional about being encouraging (filling full of courage) our gifted and dedicated leaders.
- This Sunday the title of the message is “What are you willing to die for?” We’ll look at some examples of what some have been willing to die for in the past, what Jesus was willing to die for (YOU), and what we can do to live a life so full of passion that we know what we’re willing to die for. This is a great message to invite your friends and neighbors to hear. The bible says that if we lift up Jesus, HE will draw all men to Himself. Jesus will be lifted up, so let’s take the opportunity to draw close to Him with our family and friends. Don’t let anyone you love or care about face a godless eternity. Invite a friend!
May God bless you with a God-filled week filled with God-adventures.
