Weekly Update from Damascus Road Community Church
April 23 , 2008
Dear Family and Friends,
BAPTISM: Last Sunday, eight wonderful people, in obedience to Matthew 28:18-20, were baptized into the salvation and leadership of Christ. It was an hour of life-transformed testimonies from:
Taylor Hill, Lauren Frank, Kyle Johnson, Emily Maria, Brian and Christy Dillman, Tom and Julie Freeman. Another baptism service is coming soon.
PRINCETON RACE: Last Saturday, the first annual Princeton 5k Seek Justice Run, sponsoring Good News India (a ‘Dream-Center’ orphanage that rescues little girls from the sex slave trade) was a huge success. Exactly $7,000 was raised towards the $65,000 needed for the new Dream Center. Damascus Road brought two dozen runners, the second largest block of runners (after the Seminary); and provided most of the high drama [would we live or die] of the day! The single biggest Chariots of Fire moment came as Chris Horne and Paul Foss sprinted the last 100 yards and crossed the finish line together. Our own Tim Morgan (who is slightly older than college age) gave a trio of guys from the Princeton University Cross-country team a hard run for their money, that is, for India’s money.
LIVE THE RED: Our LIVE THE RED (words of Jesus) series concludes this Sunday. If it has achieved its goal, you are more determined to LIVE THE RED for the rest of your life. Jesus’ character, teachings and saving work emerge fully through the distinctive focus of each Gospel. Now you know which Gospel highlights key themes: Jesus’ Kingdom (Matthew), Jesus’ compassionate power (Mark), Jesus’ salvation for all (Luke) and Jesus’ divinity (John). Dig into the RED, and the RED will build Christ’s character in you.
EVERYONE SAVE THESE TWO DATES:
- May 4: All Church Haven sharing-Jesus’ love-event for special needs families.
- June 1: on the land! Be a part of our helicopter group photo-op of the Church [us] standing inside the area of the Church [our future facility]. That will be a historic photo and this will be an anointed day. All-family service and a fellowship meal afterwards.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE: remember: every $135 = one square foot (you can stand in that!) of our new facility. Together we will see this Light on a Hill legacy become reality if we are all in—doing our part in following God’s heart to our future. In the last two weeks we added another 242 square feet [$32,648]. Thanks to all of you who faithfully support our ministries with your tithe; then go above in sacrificial giving for this ministry center. This part of your life’s legacy will yield eternal fruit.
MAY 4 HAVEN GOOD NEWS EVENT: May 4 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. is truly a day for everyone and truly an opportunity for you to be the heart and hands of Jesus through a smile or handshake and having fun. Edie Gordon sent this request to all of us who did—and all of you who yet will—sign up to help:
Volunteers: let’s meet for a brief [12:15-12:45] instructional "Good News" meeting this Sunday, April 27, in the cafeteria. Our purpose is: review our vision, share specific service assignments, then form small service groups to encourage/equip teams. Team leaders: plan to go over any important details. If you are unable to attend, please let Edie know. Thanks so much for your help and support.
This Sunday you have opportunity to apply to your life seven words, that make no sense if anyone but Jesus spoke them: Do not let your hearts be troubled. Don’t allow anything to trouble your heart! Why not? Jesus says: Trust in God, trust also in Me. See you Sunday.
It is such a gift to be a part of this community and watch the love of Jesus grow in you. Richard
